Out There is a short documentary about 5 fishermen living on a Dutch fishing ship far off the coast. Life and it’s duties continues 24 hours a day, and so far away from civilization on shore time seems to have far less (if any) meaning to the men on board. While drifting on the endless waves, with nothing in sight thoughts take over the mind, and wonder off into seemingly nothing.
I’ve made this short documentary for my graduation at the Utrecht University of the Arts where I’ve studies documentary directing. I had been filming a documentary about industrial fishing before, but came to mind about the subject. Instead of the production cycle the men on these ships seemed very interesting. How could they live these endless and lonely days at sea? And did they -just like me wander off in thoughts while staring at the endless sea?
